Frequently Asked Questions
At The French American School of Tampa Bay (FASTB), we offer a thoughtfully designed bilingual program that immerses students in the French language while progressively integrating English instruction. This approach not only fosters fluency in both languages but also cultivates cultural awareness and cognitive flexibility.
Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 1: Full French Immersion
In the early years, our students are fully immersed in the French language. Instruction across all subjects is conducted exclusively in French, creating an environment where children naturally acquire the language through daily interactions and academic activities. This immersive experience lays a strong foundation for bilingualism, as young learners absorb the language in a manner akin to their first language acquisition.
Grades 2 to 5: Introducing English Language Arts and American Studies
Beginning in Grade 2, English Language Arts and American Studies are gradually introduced into the curriculum. French remains the principal language of instruction, while students begin formal reading, writing, and cultural studies in English. This balanced integration ensures students develop strong literacy skills in both languages and are well-equipped to navigate diverse academic settings.
English instruction is carefully coordinated with the French curriculum to reinforce core concepts across both languages. For example, students might explore shared themes in both French and English classes, enhancing comprehension and critical thinking: i.e. IB PYP research projects.
Beyond Language: A Holistic Educational Experience
At FASTB, bilingual education is part of a broader, well-rounded academic journey. Our curriculum also includes:
-
Mathematics, Science, History, and Geography: Taught in French, helping students develop reasoning skills within an international framework.
-
Music and the Arts: Programs such as Music Together® and Suzuki guitar foster creativity, focus, and cultural appreciation (fastb.org).
-
Physical Education and Extracurricular Activities: Promoting wellness, teamwork, and joy in learning.
Accreditation and Global Vision
FASTB is accredited by the French Ministry of Education (AEFE) and is a proud member of the Mission Laïque Française (MLF) and the Association of French Schools in North America (AFSA).
